    Honey substitute

Duh - memory's going down the gurgler! I just checked my recipe sheets (Beersmith) and I DID make notes. Honey went in 5 minutes before flame out. Along with the cardamom pods, nutmeg, cinnamon sticks and cloves - all at 5'. Thanks Barls for the confirmation.

    Honey substitute

I *think* I added it in the mash. I didn't make any specific note about it. At the time, whatever I did seemed logical. It would have been at a stage where I could rinse out the honey container. Note to self: Keep better notes!!!

2017 SEQ Christmas Case Swap - Tasting thread

#22 Pilsner/Belgian Ale (couple of weeks to carb) Opened the second one this afternoon, and maybe I just don't like Belgian Ales! Both mine were cloudy, flat and headless, and reminiscent of the beginners home-brews I was turning out in the 70's using powdered Brigalow kits in the heat of a...

We're using Google's Chromecast, but it does require an HDMI socket on the tv.

MP - I enjoyed what was left of your #3 the other afternoon - holy crap Batman, it was a gusher to be proud of! By the time I got the bottle over the railing to finish it's frothy extravaganza, there wasn't a heck of a lot remaining. Wasn't sure what it would do to the deck (corrode s/s nails...

12 - Imperial Porter Great beer! Notes of coffee, chocolate, even Tia Maria, and a nice alcohol warmth. Really enjoyed it. Nice one, Angus.

    Honey substitute

I used a very tasty honey in my swap Julebryg this year (SE Qld swap). 8% of the malt/grain bill. It wasn't watered down supermarket stuff either. I buy it direct from a bee-keeper in Toowoomba for $6/kg, but I can't remember if it was a straight varietal, or from a mix of flowers/trees.

FS - new Hanna 98128 pH meter

Long story, but I have a new Hanna 98128 surplus to requirements - $150 (including some sachets of calibration solution) I've been using my original 98128 for a couple of years, but recently couldn't successfully calibrate it. It rejected the 7 solution. I changed the electrode over with an old...

Has mash ph been an improvement for you?

Long story, but I have a new Hanna 98128 surplus to requirements - $150. I've been using my original 98128 for a couple of years, but recently couldn't successfully calibrate it. It rejected the 7 solution. I changed the electrode over with an old one, and then it accepted the 7, but rejected...

2017 SEQ Christmas Case Swap - Tasting thread

I had the same issue a few months back with two of my PETs - most of the beer had escaped somehow, but the bottles were still strongly pressurised. A visual inspection revealed no flaws. [Cue here the theme from The Twilight Zone...]

Kettle design WRT chilling & whirlpooling

Despite not being an engineer :p, I actually made up a spreadsheet before I started no-chilling to calculate ice requirements, based on draining hot wort through my rectangular chiller coil. Was a good brain exercise!

    What's with the PC ********?

Wrinkly's point-of-view: It seemed to be (a Christian country) when I was growing up. I can remember once a week at school (a state school) we had RE - religious education. We were divided up into 'religions' and off we went to different classrooms for half an hour. The 'religions' on offer were...

Kettle design WRT chilling & whirlpooling

I think by next brewday I'll bring the old chiller coil (the rectangular one) out of retirement. I used it before I became aware of No-Chill. I made it up to fit an iced-water filled 'Esky' and then drained the wort through the copper tube into the FV. It worked very well, and chilled 23 litres...

    What's with the PC ********?

Question without notice: Do non-Christians in this country observe Christmas and Easter holidays? Or do they conscientiously work right through... And do the republicans in our midst enjoy the Queen's Birthday holiday? Just wondering.

Kettle design WRT chilling & whirlpooling

Thanks for the figures. It was an eye-opener that after 10 minutes or so, just how warm the base of the keggle felt, compared with the sides in contact with the wort.

Kettle design WRT chilling & whirlpooling

After a few years of no-chilling, I've been pondering why my dark beers turn out better than pale ones.I think I have the answer - the dark ones are usually malt-driven, where as the pales I have been trying to brew are lacking the desired hop flavours and aromas. Without employing the Argon...
