    All Grain Beer (with Ginger)

Thanks Luxo. Head retention is not normally a problem with my brews, but I have note used sugar or honey before. Will delete the honey and sugar as I was unsure about those ingredients as well. Palm sugar was another option I considered but rejected as well. I do not have a sweet tooth and the...

    All Grain Beer (with Ginger)

Hi GB fans. Luxo how did the GB turn out you planned? I am resurrecting this old thread as I am also interested in an all grain beer with ginger. Doing my research I have sampled several GB's but only three that had a malt base and noted the ingredients where possible and listed them in order to...

    Cold / Hot Break Trub

Ok great WEAL. Will order a helix spring and tee. From what I gather it is basically a flexible filter and the tee is used to close of both ends of the helix. It was a step I had missed in in reading up of All Grain BIAB.

    Cold / Hot Break Trub

Ok Thanks guys. What is a helix Weal and how does that work. My practice has been to get it chilled down and into the fermenter as quickly as possible, may have to consider covering it up and leaving it overnight.

    Cold / Hot Break Trub

The problem I have is that the coagulated mass (maybe cold break) whatever it is is in suspension like clouds. It is impossible to seperate it from the wort as it is at various levels. It was my understanding that the quicker you chill and get it into the fermenter the better. Maybe I need to...

    Cold / Hot Break Trub

Hi All I am not clear on the Cold / Hot Break Trub issue. I have been All Grain BIAB brewing for about 6 months. I believe I make decent drinkable brews but still want to improve. I mash APA's around 66 - 67 C for 1 hour and then boil the wort for 90 minutes. With about 15 minutes to go I add my...

    Grain Mill

I am a newbie and generally try to keep it simple without over engineering everything. It pays not to overthink things! For instance which way does the grain go through the rollers? Pointy ends first or sideways? Also I did not realise rye did not have a husk, it also seems a very hard grain...

If you gave up brewing a few years back and what made you get back into it

I tried home brewing brielfy over 30 years ago but gave it up for various reasons. Several factors influenced my decision to start up again late last year. Retirement. BIAB The range of quality ingredients. Damm cheap affordable new gear. And I like trying different beers.

    Third time lucky ginger beer

Looks good Brugo. I have been considering trying a ginger beer now I have got my brewhouse sorted. Like the idea of fresh chillie, never tried vermouth. Thats a cocktail base is it not! Please let us know how it turns out.

At last, a hobby that saves money!

I have only been BIAB for less than 6 months and before I commited I did the sums. My ball park calcs were similar to Engibeer. I came up with my cost of ingredients only, at about $2 a litre. This did not include consumables, LPG, CO2, water, cleaning chemicals whatever. My previous beer tastes...

    Something wrong with regulator?

Congratulations tr, you now have a serviced a pressure regulator! In our throw away society most people would have binned it an brought another one. From your photos the internals appeared in good condition, should be good for another 10 yeras with a bit of luck.

    Something wrong with regulator?

Ok. Again I would be carefull using a hair dryer on the diaphragm, you may damage it. It sounds like gas is passing through the inlet valve or diaphragm, if they are clean and undamaged the cause is anybodys guess!

    Something wrong with regulator?

You have to be very carefull servicing regulators and gauges, remember they are a safety device. Have a close look at the diaphragm and seat (black and white bits) for any damage, tears or deterioation. I would not use acetone it may damaged the diaphragm. Did you remove the brass inlet valve...

    Something wrong with regulator?

Always good practice to crack gas cylinders (quickly open and close the valve) before fitting the regulator. This will remove any bits of **** in the bottle outlet port.

ultratap or intertap? is there a difference?

Hi Guys I am suprised and amused by the crock regarding welding of kegs and even more suprised that their are no welders speaking up. With over 40 years of experience in the pressure welding industry I am amazed by some of the incorect comments on welding process's. Welding a stainless steel keg...

    Newbie

Welcome Ben. I am a recent brewer as well with about 12 brews to date. Heaps of great advice on this website particularly in relation to fermentation temperatures and equipment. A good fridge fitted with a STC-1000 and the fan recommended by Grmblz is a must. I have a couple of 25 kg bags of...

Gas Burner...Finally getting back into all-grain

I have a $80 cast iron Gasmate brand 3 ring burner from the big green shed. Boils my 30lt keggle on the inner and middle rings. You get what you pay for though, the quality is not real good. I had to tweak the air mixture but the outer ring still burns with a yellow flame. In hindsight I would...
