    GUTEN

That's true for very old microwaves. New(er) "inverter" microwaves can set arbitrary power levels. It is definitely a bit lame that the Guten uses a bang-bang control scheme. While PID is overkill (at the homebrew level) for a plant with such huge inertia (i.e. huge vat of liquid), P control...

Start up research help: Lock down idea - A pre-made yeast starter that saves the environment

Need to know the embodied energy of each can, the embodied CO2 and how you're offsetting it. Also needs a strong selling point to justify it being $14.25 more expensive than my starters currently, which have no disposable packaging (until the DME bag runs out, then it is recycled). Edit: Using...

Two Bays (Gluten Free) Grain Kits

Medically, there are allergies (like wheat allergy), and Coeliac disease, which is a type IV hypersensitivity (autoimmune) condition. Clarityferm isn't safe in either. For those "sensitive to gluten" (usually self-diagnosed), believing that their food is gluten free usually fixes all symptoms...

Two Bays (Gluten Free) Grain Kits

Thanks for sharing the story. I have tried some Two Bays brews and was blown away with how good they got them. Prior to that, GF beers I'd tried were attempting to copy macro lagers and tasted even worse. I stopped short of buying ingredients when I saw the prices – easier for me to just buy...

I'll try to 3D print a spray nozzle prototype and machine it out of aluminium when I get a chance. What's the consensus on the false bottom vs. helix coil situation? I can definitely confirm that the bazooka screen clogs too quickly and isn't helpful. A false bottom seems easier to clean and...

Doing my first brew now (8.5 L batch of Meanbrew's Dark Mild). I'm doing an 8.5 L batch, which is my go-to atm, as I'm loving no-chill with cooling, fermenting and serving from the same 9.5 L keg. The recipe uses 13.28 L of starting water, of which I heated and reserved 2 L for sparging. The...

Thanks guys. This makes sense. So ultimately you need a 1 min step at a temp that it will reach quickly so that you can be there to click it along to the next step. After that, it will auto-step until the boil stage. It's also a bit of a shame that you have to hack it to ramp to boil with full...

Anyone still doing delayed starts on these? See @kadmium's post below. I'm just doing a water-only run on mine to get the temps, boil-off, etc. dialled in. My basic auto program is this: Heat strike 70°C @ 2400 W for 1 min Mash at 67°C @ 300 W for 60 min [small batches] Mash out at 76°C @ 2400...

Mark, how about lauter efficiency? It seems you can recover a lot of liquid with BIAB by squeezing, but there doesn't seem to be a good way to do this with the all-in-one systems without risk of damage to your malt pipe.

    GUTEN

Reading this thread with keen interest. I've just taken the plunge and ordered a 40L Guten, and subsequently read all 107 pages! I'm expecting a drop in efficiency (currently 85% with BIAB), but hoping the convenience and temp control will be worth it. Anyone doing small (8.5–9.5 L) batches...

The Corona Virus (COVID 19) Thread

Disappointing, but at least reassuring that his friends are distancing themselves from him. I only made it through 5 minutes before googling the story, but the one accurate statement Clapton made was "I'm not a scientist". I hadn't kept up with Van Morrison becoming part of the tin-foil hat...

    Hop blends?

I've never used hop blends, but I know of Falconer's Flight, which is popular. I'd avoid anything that doesn't even tell you what's in it (let alone proportions). Imagine brewing a really nice beer then not being able to reproduce it if a product is discontinued or unavailable. If you're after...

    Blueberry Muffin Recipe

To add to what MHB said – I'm sure your recipe is fine, but it's in American units (where a cup is 237 mL and a tablespoon is 15 mL). We also tend to use self-raising flour rather than buying plain (AP) and adding baking powder. It's just a curious choice to go to a brewing forum and post twice...

    Mixing Cascade with Galaxy hops

That's...not what I suggested. The SNPA recipe as linked above is not dry hopped. For other recipes where there is dry-hopping, I'd suggest doing it before final gravity is reached. That way, you have some CO2 production to re-purge the vessel of oxygen. I do 24h (high krausen) for NEIPAs and...

    Mixing Cascade with Galaxy hops

I'd definitely recommend using the official recipe as-is for SNPA (well, use whatever hop you like for bittering). It's not a hop bomb, and it's not dry-hopped. Appreciate it for what it is, and how it influenced the APAs that came afterwards. Add wheat, a bit of chinook and dry hop with...

    "AF" Beers

I made Nanny State and was thoroughly disappointed. Nice hop aroma, nice body, but awful harsh bitterness. Probably because the BU:GU ratio is huge. Anyone had a similar experience? Going to give up on NA beers and focus on hop water, Berliner Weisses and session IPAs instead.
