    Total Disaster

Chin up mate. Just go back and assess how you went wrong and keep having a crack. It's meant to be an enjoyable hobby. Cynical old fart I am reckons the drinking is the best bit of the fun. I BIAB and get the suppliers to mill my grain. After many years of very basic processes, I still love...

    Bottle Storage.

I use both stubbies and bigguns. Bigguns go in wine boxes 6s and stubbies go in 32 lt plastic storage boxes that got many years ago at the old $2 type shops. The plastic storage boxes hold 24 and just work well with cleaning and storage.

purine free (or at least low) beers

I too suffered from the dreaded gout. I take Allorpurinol and have never been afflicted by horrid affliction since. In fact, tonight I'm having prawn bisque for dinner. Get on it dude.

    All grain over carbonation

I reckon you might have a wild yeast issue. In my early days I had the odd bottle gusher. It never tasted off or anything, just annoying. I only bottle in glass now and nuke the bottles with sod-per, then phos-acid prior to bottling. Can't remember the last gusher, so that's gotta be a good thing.

What happened to Wide Eyed And Legless?

Did not WEAL have health issues? Things can sometimes go south at a rate of knots. His political comments infuriated me but I loved his posts. People come and go, they always will. But seriously, if I read another post about misreading of refractometers, I'll spew up. I wonder what happened to WEAL?

    New User, New Brewer

Seems like you're on top of all the basics. Except about the proper storage of brewing ingredients. If you are confident of your sanitation, package and put it down to a lesson learnt about storing yeast, in the fridge until needed.

Is it possible to grab the yeast from coopers cans???

I reckon it's a cracker of a yeast. It's no problem. I re-use all types of yeast over several gens', even dry. The mauri with their kits, imho, is very different to the bottle yeast. I like the mauri as well. I'm fairly lazy, but the small amount of effort is well worth it for the taste and to...

Is it possible to grab the yeast from coopers cans???

I have used the yeast sediment from sparkling ale stubbies many times with outstanding results. I get a six-pack, sanitise around the lid, open, pour the beer into a glass, recap and put in the fridge. When I've drunk all six, I start the step-up process. I've done this with the higher alcohol...

Bottle carbonation - yeast raft or infection?

So did the stuff at the top settle to the bottom of the bottle after chilling? Like alot of us, looking for strange stuff can help us in the future. The truth is out there Scully.

Bottle carbonation - yeast raft or infection?

So I've go to wait until sunday? Tip one upside down and put it in the fridge tonight. I bet that stuff drops down when chilled. Why I'm so curious is that I've never seen anything like that in bottled beer.

Bottle carbonation - yeast raft or infection?

Invert one a few times and put it in the fridge. See if all that stuff drops to the bottom. You won't have to worry about being maimed by a bottle-bomb as they're PET. Drink some, if it tastes like infected arse-juice, you can give it to people you dont like. My guess is its finings residue...

    Brewing MisHap

I got breathoed ages ago, on the way home from work, on two consecutive days. On the first day the young officious constable made me wait 10 minutes in 40 degree heat, did it again and let me go. The 2nd day, after consuming the exact same amount (2 travellers), a different young cop smiled and...

    Fining with Gelatine when bottling

I bottle. I used gelatin maybe once or twice with some light lagers. Wouldn't bother again. I brew clear enough beer as it is. Maybe others who keg could offer advice, but like me, you bottle. I try to keep my process as simple as possible. Have a look, there's stacks of posts about fining with...

    Using honey

Save it for toast in the morning mate. It's individual flavour would probably get lost in the ferment in my opinion. It would be a different story if you had even 5kg or so, enough to waste, which I reckon chucking it in a ferment would be. Drizzle it over a good plain(unflavoured) yogurt mmm.

Whats your biggest regret in giving up a piece of brewing gear and you wish you kept

I had a Swiss girlfriend in my early 20s. I regret leaving her. She was the best natured and good-hearted lady I've ever known. Hindsight is a luxury none of us can afford. Oh? You meant brewing gear. Sorry. I never throw anything out. My parents grew up during the depression, it certainly rubs...

    Stopping yeast post ferment

Pasteurisation. Check out how big brewers go about their stuff. Product must be stable and uniform.

    Traffic

This site has been so helpful to me over the years with my brewing endeavours. For a couple of years, due to family circuspantsers, I had to stop brewing, and so was not into what was going on at this marvellous resource. When I returned, I realised that most of the old mob had ****** off...
