    Brewzilla vs Guten

I’m probably going to jump in sooner rather than later. If I always waited for the next bigger, better thing to come out I’d never buy anything. I’m impressed with the Brewzilla 3.1.1 version now they’ve ironed out the issues from earlier models and it looks like a good bit of kit, especially...

    Brewzilla vs Guten

Great, that’s exactly what I was hoping someone would post. Thanks

    Brewzilla vs Guten

I’m looking ahead to getting an all in one system and move to AG. It will probably be one of these two models. I have 15 amp. I need guidance as to what size unit to get as that will go a long way to helping me decide which brand to buy. The only thing I’m sure of is the smaller, 35L versions...

    Rolled Wheat vs Torrefied Wheat

I just included both of these in my order, because I couldn’t chose between them. I’m going to put a small amount of one in my next Dunkelweizen brew to increase the head retention. I suspect either will do virtually the same thing. If you had to chose, which one would you use?

    Converting Flaked Barley

I’m working on lower efficiency for the mini mash, and was expecting 5.8% ABV. Still high for a Dunkelweizen, but I want to get all those ingredients in there. If it turns out Dunkel Doppelbock-ish that will be fine, they’re very nice. Not sure what to do with the hops. Half at 60 minutes and...

    Converting Flaked Barley

The Briess wheat extract is only 65% wheat and 35% base malt, that’s why I didn’t want to add more Pilsner. I wanted to add as much dark Munich as I could seeing as this ones a Dunkelweizen. Seeing as I’m posting, it will look like this in a 21L brew- 3kg Briess wheat extract 800g Dark Munich...

    Converting Flaked Barley

Actually I will probably use Flaked Wheat. I had good carbonation but poor head retention in my first Hefeweizen, and I decided to do something about it this time. As far as I can tell, Flaked Wheat and Flaked Barley have similar head retention properties. Ok so I’ll have to find room for some...

    Converting Flaked Barley

If I do a mini-mash with 1kg of Dark Munich and 200g of Flaked Barley, will the Munich have enough power to convert the Flaked Barley? If not, I could add a small amount of Pilsner to do the job but it’s not what I wanted to do with the Dunkelweizen recipe.

    Rochefort 10

Na, I’m not in any hurry as I was planning 3 to 4 weeks in primary. Just that the last few days it’s dropped 1 point per day, which is not what I’ve seen before so far out from FG. Only reason I posted was to get ahead of the game in case I had to spend the next few days getting a starter ready...

    Rochefort 10

Ok, so I’m having my first problematic fermentation, which is disappointing because I’ve made bigger beers than this before. This is my first yeast starter, so I’m pointing the finger there. I made a 3L starter from one smack pack, then stirred and aerated for 48 hours then chilled in fridge...

    Rochefort 10

I’m personally not that interested in making my own Belgium Candi when the bought stuff is so good and probably makes or breaks the finished beer.

    Rochefort 10

I brewed this yesterday. Because I did a proper mini-mash I extracted more out of the grains than I usually do, so the OG was higher than expected. Ordinarily I wouldn’t worry about it, but seeing as I’m trying to match an actual beer, I added an extra one litre of water into the fermenter to...

    Yeast Starter

kadmium I admire your process of building a bank of yeast. To be honest I don’t see myself doing that, I’m probably to lazy. I’ve got a great Wyeast supplier a short drive away so I’m happy to buy a new smack pack each brew and start fresh with a new starter if needed for the big beers. My...

    Yeast Starter

Mark, that’s a good point about pitch rates to get the esters. I’ve got an O2 setup and seeing as it’s a 21L brew it sounds like pitching just the one smack pack is the way to go. I did cover my starter with a towel to keep the light out. Was just curious what others did.

    Yeast Starter

Out of interest, do you guys cover your starters to keep the light out of them? I’m going to do a dunkelweizen soon and have the Wyeast smack pack for it. At an OG of 1.055 is it worth making a small starter or will one smack pack be enough. I know the Wyeast guide says to make a starter above...

    Yeast Starter

A clamp is a good idea. I was thinking of ways to restrict the airflow, as it’s pumping too much air for the small volume of the flask.

    Yeast Starter

I’ve had good experience with dried yeast so far, and would use it for everything if I could. But with the Belgium’s I make the yeast is the star of the show. Considering all the effort I go to I think I would be kidding myself if I didn’t use the authentic liquid yeasts to make the specific...

    Yeast Starter

So I finished putting my starter setup together today and I made the starter for my Belgium quad brew day. From what I read here I decided to give myself 3 days to get it ready instead of 2 days. The stir plate is working really well. I decided rather than use alfoil, to make a stopper with two...

Thanks Mark. Looks like I’m doing exactly what he describes in his article.

    Yeast Starter

I’m making my yeast starter setup today. Got a 5L flask and bought a stir plate from KL. Just making the stir ‘plate’ bigger to better support the big flask. I’ve added an aerating system into the flask as well to try and optimise the yeast growth.
