    Rare Aussie Beer

That's Graeme Kennedy with his back to the camera and I think that is John Jarrett at right rear. Jarrett did some really good acting performances in that movie and Picnic at Hanging Rock, it's amazing that his career didn't really take off. Kennedy was surprisingly good in a serious role too.

    New to home brew

I disagree with Narapoia. My philosophy is to keep my bets low until I decide whether I'm going to continue with a hobby and I learn enough to know what I actually need and am knowledgeable enough to weigh up the alternatives. That goes for all sorts of hobbies, not just home brewing. If you...

Commercial Fridge free on Freecycle @ Pennant Hills Sydney

This is to alert members about this fridge on offer. It's not my fridge so don't send me PMs asking about it. The fridge is listed on Freecycle at https://www.freecycle.org/posts/88238112 The fridge is apparently located in Pennant Hills in Sydney's northern suburbs even though they have...

    Aldi specials

Thanks for that. I'm going supermarket shopping later today so I'll check in my local ALDI.

    Aldi specials

Looked this up on the Also Special Buys webpage and got this message: "We are unfortunately experiencing shipping delays which means this Special Buys™ will not be in store on the advertised on-sale date." 😧 All the stores in my area are listed as "No stock information available" Looks like...

Coopers new release, noobs take the next step!

I signed up to the Cooper's Club 2 months ago and so far I've only received the ROTM emails. Maybe Cooper's are getting so much online business during lockdown they don't feel the need to offer free shipping.

    pricing liquid vs dry yeasts

At the rate at which yeast multiplies you're probably looking at generation several million after the first brew and generation several gazillion after the third, so it's not surprising that the yeast has mutated significantly from the original and the flavour profile has changed. The advantage...

    Coopers real ale batch

The extra time and cost are trivial IMO. If you are careful about cleaning and sanitation I don't see how there is any greater risk of infection than there is pitching straight into the wort. That risk of infection is the same as making a starter with liquid yeast or culturing the Coopers bottle...

    Coopers real ale batch

So the 7gm of yeast in the kits is about a 50% underpitch for a 23lt batch. Making a starter sounds better and better.

    Coopers real ale batch

I'm no expert but if bread yeast was equivalent to beer yeast then why do professional brewers spend the money buying particular strains from the yeast labs? AIUI beer strains are chosen for their good flavours and lack of undesirable characteristics, whereas presumably bread yeast is not. If i...

Why are you adding bread yeast to your wort?

    Worst Comerical Beer You Had

Back on topic: back in the 70s the only beers on tap in most pubs was Reschs because most of them were owned by Reschs brewery and were tied houses - the licensee tenant was only allowed by the terms of his lease to serve Reschs' products. Reschs Draught was evil stuff, it produced a sickly...

    Worst Comerical Beer You Had

One of the things I noticed was that a lot of tourists and backpackers hang around with other tourists/backpackers and consequently have little interaction with the locals other than waiters and the hustlers in the tourist traps. I found that travelling on my own on buses in Indonesia and...

    Worst Comerical Beer You Had

OT: They say that travel broadens the mind, but clearly not for a lot of tourists to judge by all the Watneys Red Barrel and "Bratwurst mit Bier" signs you see in the tourist traps of Kuta and Phuket. Why travel to the other side of the world to eat the same food and drink the same beer as you...

    flasks and stir bar problems

Not sure about borosilicate but ordinary glass behaves like a fluid. If you set a sheet of plate glass on edge and leave it there, and come back and measure the thickness the bottom will be thicker than the top. Flip it over and the glass will slowly flow back to the bottom.
