I should add that other people have tried the IPA at different venues and all have reported the same murky beer.

I'm in the same boat as you OP. Never have had a kit beer that hasn't tasted like ass. All grain fine, kit beer bad. I think its just the kit beer. Some people just have different palates.

Drank the Coopers Brew A IPA. 6%, 60IBU. The beer was marketed as a cloudy ale... and boy was that an understatement. It was a slurry. A soup. I spoke to the bar manager about it, they pour only Coopers so they know how to handle the kegs. Stored upside down before tapping, keg rolled before...

Yep that's why. Not under pressure, the fermenters had blow off hoses going into big white buckets. The activity in the buckets... was going BANANAS.

Pirate Life use US05 for their yeast. The brewer told me when I was at the brewery. They also ferment at 21 degrees.

I'd go a fresh wort kit. Easy as piss and gets you back into the swing of things. And the fresh wort kits are a proper AG kit so the beer is gunna be good, much better than a kit and kilo.

I've smashed a hydrometer exactly the same way. and I had JUST bought it. D'oh! The way I manage fermentation - I do a hydro reading just before the yeast is first pitched. I take a quick squizz at the fermenter about two days later just to make sure some activity is happening. Then I leave it...

It annoys me that Coopers say beer will be ready in two weeks, for me this has never been the case. More like 4 weeks.

What an awesome gift!!! I'm so sorry about to hear about your mum. I lost my mother in April this year, she went from being perfectly seemingly healthy last Christmas to being diagnosed with cancer in Jan and she died in April, 13 weeks later. No two ways about it - losing your mother is tough...
