Sterilising PET bottles - in the middle of nowhere.

AN update for anyone watching the thread. I have now sampled 2 of the bottles. Alcoholic - most definately. Certainly gives you a buzz. Carbonated - no. Not sure why, I suspect that the lids did not re-seal very well. Or not enough sugar for the secondary fermentation. Taste: Mmmm. Let me just...

Sterilising PET bottles - in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for the comments. I decanted my 6 litre tester into 1 litre used Pepsi bottles today. I will see how it turns out in a couple of weeks,

Sterilising PET bottles - in the middle of nowhere.

The juice comes in Tetra packs not bottles. Also I want to brew in batches not individual bottles. That sounds too hit and miss.

Sterilising PET bottles - in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks again. Wereprawn. Smells with such a small operation is not a problem at the moment. I have a small place seperate from others. Besides I am surrounded by expats who would not tell. practical fool: I am "somewhere in Asia" not sandland. I can buy local beer cheaply, but I really miss...

Sterilising PET bottles - in the middle of nowhere.

Newtown Clown. Thanks I will see if I can get unscented bleach and give it a try. I see that others suggest a bleach/vinegar mix. (Surely that is an Acid and a Base and you get a chemical reaction?) wereprawn. Thanks, the Esky trick is not practical at the moment. I am running this on a...

Sterilising PET bottles - in the middle of nowhere.

Homebrewers. I am trying to brew Cider in the tropics. (This is not a Cider brewing question I am not posting in the wrong forum). I am some distance from civilisation and cannot get all of the bits that you take for granted. My question is how can I sterilise PET bottles? I am reusing 1 litre...

First Stout - have I made a fundamental error

FInal update. Just sampled my stout. I could not wait any longer. It is dark, it has plenty of mouth feel, nice odour, maybe a little light on aftertaste - but I can forgive that. To be honest it tastes bloody great. Roll on winter.

Yeast flavours in Cider - I like it

Thanks Dave/airgead I did not know that about the French Champagne. Generally I use Champagne yeast for Cider, so I can think about doing what you suggest. As I said, I get very little sediment in my bottle, so far have not discovered the flavour from the sediment, I just gave a sample from my...

Yeast flavours in Cider - I like it

Been away for a while. Thanks for the jokes. @jdw81 To date my bottles have come out with very little sediment, both beers and ciders. Not sure if I am getting something right or wrong there. I always put 7g of Sugar into the bottle to get the carbonation. They are always carbonated and I have...

George Washington (yes the former president) Beer Recipe

Thought that I would share a beer recipe from George Washington, courtesy of the New York Public Library. More information at the link. http://www.nypl.org/locations/tid/36/node/40921 "Take a large Sifter full of Bran Hops to your Taste -- Boil these 3 hours. Then strain out 30 Gall. into a...

    My first crack at cider

The only dumb question is the one that you don't ask. (Unless you are a politician and then you only ask a question if you already know the answer. Sigh) Plenty of other questions in the forum like this, but I will clarify a few points. The yeast in your kit will convert all of the...

Yeast flavours in Cider - I like it

I just cracked a bottle of CIder from a brew earlier this year. I had marked the bottle at the time as it was the last one and got some dregs from the bottom of the fermenter. Compared to the other bottles it had a definate yeasty flavour - which I quite liked! To the extent that I was wondering...

    Recommendations on cider kits

I like a dry Cider and found the Brigalow Kit quite OK for my taste buds. I will say that at times I think it is more like a wine in falvour and lightness, rather than a cider. But extremely drinkable. I know that a lot of people onthis and other forumsare quite disparaging about the Brigalow...

    First Cider Brew

Good idea on the Nudie. I will look into it for next time. Hoping to get some "real" fresh apple juice from the orchards for the next brew.
