Rock 'n' roll legend Chuck Berry has died at the age of 90, Missouri police say.

The St Charles County Police Department announced his death in a post on their Facebook page.

"The St Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr, better known as legendary musician Chuck Berry," it said.

Police said they were called to a medical emergency at a Buckner Road address at about 12:40pm on Saturday (local time).

"Inside the home, first responders observed an unresponsive man and immediately administered lifesaving techniques," the police department said.

"Unfortunately, the 90-year-old man could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at 1:26pm.

"The family requests privacy during this time of bereavement."

With songs like Sweet Little Sixteen, Maybellene, Roll Over Beethoven and Johnny B Goode in the late 1950s, Berry helped lay the foundation for modern rock music and was a major influence on scores of 1960s bands, including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

The St Louis, Missouri, songwriter and guitar player was given a Grammy lifetime achievement award in 1984 and was in the first class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees

Yep. Travel well Mr. Berry, and play some tunes along the way.

RIP to one of the all time greats.

He even had a song included on the records that were placed in both Voyager spacecraft back in 1977.

I just wish that the influence of legends like himself and dozens of other great Black American musicians was greater than it seems to be today among younger Black Americans.

The complete rock & roll artist. Sublime musician who let his guitar shine through every song; intelligent and pithy lyricist; and what a great showman on stage.

RIP Mr Berry. Thank you.

Sad to hear.

Bye the way Chuck Berry - Etta James is a much better version of Rock and Roll music than the one with Tina Turner.

Sad news.

Only recently bought a boxed CD set of his first 5 albums.

Great artist, very influential.

Warra, what are these CDs you speak of? :)

Amazing that he was actually before my time so to speak but he laid the foundations for my generation, Beatles et. al. and was still kicking along till yesterday. I bet YouTube and ITunes are going ballistic, Roll over B. was one of the best RnB songs ever, my favourite version is the ELO one.

Had pictures of Chuck plastered over my bedroom walls as a teenager and was and still am in awe. Saw him in the 70s at festival hall with members of Daddy Cool backing him. Have every record he made. Love em all. This man introduced me to a world of music from Muddy to Louis Jordan to hillybilly stuff. Legend.

There you go Bribie.

Agree with you on the ELO version of Roll Over Beethoven (notice how its initials spell ROB ?) Only played it a couple of days ago.

Interesting you show a clip featuring John Lennon stating that Chuck Berry was his hero.

While this was true, when they actually got to perform together it didn't go well, thanks to Yoko

Poor old Geoff can't hit the notes nowadays, like Mick Jagger and Tom Jones, but back in the 70s..................

I told my 6-year old daughter Chuck Berry had died. She was danced to sleep to mostly doo-wop and old rock n' roll from age 0-5. I played her ROB, Johnny B. Goode and Maybellene and she said, "Oh no, him! Now we won't hear those anymore." I explained we had recordings to listen to. She said, "But I still feel sad."

I'm really going to miss his proficiency for pissing and farting on hookers. Still basically invented rock though.

One of the original bad boys/nasty fuckers of rock.
