Moderation Guidelines- Announcement

With Aussiehomebrewer entering a new era of moderators it has been decided to have a more clear and concise set of guidelines that map each forum against the rules. Each moderator has had the opportunity to give their feedback regarding how they believe the rules are interpreted and how as a group we can manage. These set of guidelines are still a work in progress but should be announced over the weekend.

This will give all members a clear indication as to how forums will be managed such as how off topic posts will be dealt with in the Brew Shed as opposed to the Pub or Off topic forums.

They will also contain expectations and guidelines of behaviour of members. There is also a matter I need to present to the owner regarding the market place and retailers.

Please understand these guidelines are being developed with the intention being to build and enhance consistency and transparency, as this has been frequently noted as a matter of concern by some members.

Once the guidelines are posted live to the board we will open it to feedback, this feedback will remain open until such time that it has served it purpose.

Please understand that we are not offering members the opportunity to rewrite the site rules or make the final decision on how we moderate but to gather feedback on items of interest that may have been overlooked or remain ambiguous. All members are encouraged to give constructive feedback.

The most important thing to remember is that the rules have not changed, and they do not need to be changed. Their interpretation by moderation staff however do need to be more clearly defined. This in no way means that their is a lack of confidence in the current moderation team, in fact total opposite. It is designed to get all members on the same page.

Our stand on questioning moderation decisions still and always will stand.

Stay tuned.

Cheers

An announcement regarding recent moderation and expectations of members.

OK guys – in an effort to reduce the inevitable internet dramas and complaints about moderation etc we have written the following.

A lot of you will have noticed some recent permanent bans and some warnings being given out.

It is agreed by all moderators, site admin, new owners and indeed many members that the site could be vastly improved. It is a brewing site dedicated to discussing home brewing of all levels of expertise, not a facebook, livejournal, instagram, twitter or bchan.

Some of the things we agree contribute negatively to the site include:

Rude treatment of fellow members. Treat each other as you would treat each other in real life. Choose your words with care and deliver them with respect. This is simple. No personal attacks, insults or trashing each other. It is unnecessary and unproductive. Try proof reading before hitting 'post' and if having a few, try re-reading a saved version the next time you are sober.

Limited off topic banter – there are too many unnecesarily derailed threads. Answer and ask questions, offer information from experience and learning and endeavour to research your answers and/or offer personal experience. A few laughs and jokes make the site a fun place to be but use some common sense and restraint. Pages of off topic rubbish will be cleaned. Deal with it.

Understand everyone has different literacy skills and experience - misspelling or incorrect grammar use is not sufficient reason for personal abuse.

Stop complaining about how the site is not as good as it used to be while offering nothing positive in return. You want more technical info? Do some reading and research and supply some. Ask the right questions. If you don't like anything about the site and can't contribute positively to change then find somewhere else. This includes status updates and signatures.

Absolutely NO personal attacks, racism, homophobia or sexist comments – these will be deleted and the user warned or suspended. This has been in the guidelines since day 1.

Disagreement with moderation should be expressed in PMs to moderators but before you do (and abusive PMs will not be tolerated) – examine your behaviour and see how it meets the current guidelines. Again status updates and the no topic thread are not the place for open antagonism or subtle barbed digs. Be adults.

Both moderators and members hopefully want the same thing – a brewing site where info and community is rich. Moderators are members too.

Sometimes there can be heated and passionate discussion. These are welcomed but common sense should prevail. There are ways of disagreeing that enrichen and enliven discussion and debate and there are those that don't. Most adults should be able to figure this out – when you can't, that is what moderation is for. If you are moderated, deal with it or as mentioned - politely enquire through the appropriate channels. This is a private site with guidelines that you agree to by default when you sign up and this guideline has also existed since day 1.

We are trying to make this a forum where all members feel free and comfortable discussing brewing, offering personal experience and technical know-how. It shouldn't be difficult to understand or to be a useful, contributing member.

Those who contravene the above and the other guidelines that may be found below will be warned, suspended or banned. That should be clear enough. User responsibility should prevail. This is all stuff you all should be well aware of, especially those who have been members for a while.

Best Regards

Moderation Team and Admin

Banter that prompts further discussion on the topic will remain.

Thread "hijacking" is when a threads original topic is lost due to individuals posting completely unrelated information. If a thread is hijacked, the moderators may take action to split the thread. This is not to say other valid points relating to the original topic cannot be discussed, but please consider the relevance of your post to the topic. If it is not relevant to the topic at hand then please raise a new thread. This will ensure that the search function on the site remains a valuable tool.

Most forums the rules are very easy to find. I can't find them here.

For all members who need to read the rules: without selecting the topic from the top of the Forums menu immediately under "Welcome"

Site Rules

AussieHomeBrewer (AHB) is a privately-owned community built for and frequented by individuals with an interest in brewing beer and beer related activities. Posts and content should reflect this topic.

Access to the AHB website and forum system is provided under limited conditions. The site administrators reserve the right to remove content or your access, without warning or notice, for any reason that may or may not be disclosed.

AHB collects and stores personal information during member registration, as identifiers such as IP addresses during the posting of content. Such material will not be disclosed unless lawfully requested by an enforcement agency or court order.

These site rules, moderation policy and site guidelines may be updated at any time by the site administrators, without prior notification.

Site Rules

AHB is intended to be a fun community for collaborating about beer and beer related activities. With any community of this form, some rules must be in place to ensure this community can continue to operate. The rules for this site are as follows:

1. By using AHB you agree that all posts created or edited by you are your own responsibility. As such, you agree not to hold AussieHomeBrewer, the site administrators, moderators or any other entity associated with the website responsible or in any way liable for damages of any kind with respect to content posted. To the extent permitted by law, you have waived all rights to make any claims against AussieHomeBrewer, the site administrators, moderators or any other entity associated with the Forums.
2. You are required to have a single forum account per user. If your account is banned, you as an individual are banned. Multiple accounts believed to be "false" accounts for another individual will be banned.
3. Discussion of activities or material that the site administrators believe may potentially be illegal (such as spirit distilling, distribution of copyright software/media and the unlawful acquisition of equipment such as brewery owned kegs) is not permitted.
4. Posts recommending potentially dangerous actions (such as unprotected, incorrect or dangerous 240v wiring) is not recommended, and may be removed at the discretion of the site administrators.
5. Threatening, slanderous, abusive or deliberately inflammatory messages are not to be posted and may be removed at the discretion of the site administrators.
6. Content of a discriminative nature based on gender, race, religion, political beliefs, disability or sexual orientation may be deleted at the discretion of the site administrators.
7. With the exception of polished stainless steel, copper or excessively large erlenmeyer flasks, pornography of any kind is not to be posted.
8. Advertising of beer related material is permitted at the discretion of the site administrators, providing the individual uses the correct sub forum, and requests to be identified as a Retailer.
9. Retailers are not permitted to post in other retail threads offering items at a cheaper cost, or questioning the competitors products/pricing or redirecting to other retail threads. Posts of this nature will be deleted.
10. The posting of unrelated advertising, unsolicited messages or any referral programs is not permitted without prior approval from the website Administrator.
11. Posts containing an unacceptable amount of offensive language, distasteful, vulgar or offensive material may be removed at the discretion of the site administrators.
12. Posting personal information regarding other individuals such as full names, telephone numbers, street/postal addresses and email addresses is prohibited without permission from that individual.
13. Posting the same message in multiple forums is not permitted.
14. Posts complaining about moderation, or discussing administrative decisions will be deleted. Such discussion should take place via Private Message.
15. Posts believed to be "trolling", off-topic or deliberately hijacking a thread will be deleted.
16. Private Messages can be viewed by site administrators and in certain circumstances they may be examined.

Moderation Policy

Site moderators are fellow website members with elevated privileges. This includes the ability to edit, move or delete posted content, remove the ability of an individual to post content, or temporarily remove an individuals site access.

Site administrators have complete administrative rights and may permanently remove posted content, delete or edit individuals accounts, as well as view, edit or delete Private Messages.

The moderation policy for AHB is as follows:

1. Moderators may at their discretion move, consolidate or split any content that they believe is in the incorrect sub forum or is duplicated.
2. Moderators may delete content which they believes contravenes the site rules. Deleted content can be restored, and this may later be overturned by an administrator.
3. Any actions which a moderator believes to seriously contravene the site rules may result in a moderator temporarily removing an individuals ability to post content, or temporarily removing an individuals site access.
4. Moderators decisions are not final. Any action by a moderator can be escalated to the site administrators for further review.
5. Site administrators decisions are final.

Repeated Breaches

Any member who continues to breach the rules of the site after having content deleted (i.e. reposts deleted material), or receiving a PM warning from a moderator will have their account suspended for 24 hours. Repeat offenses after this will result in a one week ban, followed by revocation of membership.

Site Guidelines

As AHB is a community focused on the discussion of brewing beer and beer related activities, it is inevitable that people frequenting the forum may be intoxicated. Please use common sense when posting after a few beers, do not deliberately attempt to inflame a situation or provoke others.

This is a privately operated website operated by fellow beer enthusiasts. The moderators do not "censor" the content posted on the AHB website, nor do they monitor every post that appears. Please be respectful of other individuals and their posts. It is fine to disagree on a topic, but do so in a constructive manner.

If you notice content which is questionable, please report it to the moderators using the "Report Post" function.

Messages should be posted in the appropriate sub forum. If you find messages posted in the incorrect place, feel free to report the post to a moderator.

It is possible to have your account renamed by contacting a site administrator.

Two search functions are provided to assist you with finding relevant information. Please search prior to posting a new topic, as the information you are seeking may already be available.

Finally - Relax, don't worry - have a home brew!!

This is what we mean by not hijacking retail threads. I was at fault here but hopefully this will be a better system?

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I took that screen capture less than 2 mins before i posted it, not yesterday. Do you mean i need to do an F5 refresh?

Yes Brad, now that you have pointed it out i have seen the tiny little writing at the bottom of the page.

Can I just add, although I am new here, the derailing of a thread with comical banter can be entertaining for all.

Surely a bit of this can be allowed on a forum where alcohol is the main discussion?

A bit yes. Not pages of bollocks. Depends on the subforum obviously - suits some more than others.
Entertainment can also be found at x-videos.

To clarify - the above is intended to be taken with a bit of humour and while not a link, the suggested entertaining website is NSFW in case you couldn't figure it out. Do not google it at work.

Plenty of areas for that to happen indica86 but we would like to see the technical threads in the brew shed stay close to on topic, it is designed to be a brewing resource.
The funny characters on this place make it a great place to hang out and we don't want to lose that. We also want areas that are for serious technical info, it can be a hard to balance out. The moderating team has the hard job of meeting that balance.

Umm, yes, thanks for that insight. I was trying to get some clarification really, not asking to be directed to a porn site.
